The Recovering Perfectionist’s Guide to Blasting Forward Into The Life You Really Want

Spoiler: It starts from within

These guides are for you if…

  • You know exactly what you want, but aren’t quite sure how to get it.
  • You feel stuck.
  • You just spent two straight days watching Real Housewives and think maaaaaybe you should’ve been doing something else.
  • You have Super Impressive Amazing accomplishments, but still feel dissatisfied and you’re not quite sure why.
  • You feel like your potential is going woefully untapped.
  • You have big, bright, amazing things that are struggling to break free from your comfy cocoon.

If you’re a recovering perfectionist, a proud member of the herd that thinks too much, feels more, and is occasionally guilty of trying to stuff the world into a careful little box – well, you’re a lot like me.

(Hi. I like you.)

Guess what? We’re perfect just as we are. But until you believe it way deep down in there, I’ve got your back.

These guides will…

  • Help you realize that you’ve got everything you need inside you right now – every answer to every problem, even if it doesn’t look like you thought it would.
  • Help you blast out of your cocoon like a heat-seeking missile butterfly.
  • Help you become what you’re meant to be, what you can be, what you want to be.
  • Guide you through whatever piece of life feels sticky or unmanageable or uncomfortable or fearful.
  • Help you find your own happiness, even if it doesn’t look like everyone else’s. Especially if it doesn’t.
  • Help you love yourself, exactly as you are, exactly where you are.
  • Help you be the compass to your own true north.
  • Help you realize your true creative potential until you’re making and doing the things you were born and built to create.
  • Help you learn to embrace failure and rejection, for the infinite possibilities they offer. Laughing in the face of the cowering rejection beast frees you to do anything you want.
  • Help you realize that what felt like flailing was really preparation to start pushing your edges. What felt like squandering was gathering the resources you need to bust free.
  • Help you claim your rights as the big, shiny human you are.

These essays are both a comforting hug and a stern kick in the ass to be your best self. Think you can’t feel soothed and inspired at the exact same time? THINK AGAIN.

Brandy – @brandyismagic

Amber writes with an experienced heart and a brilliant brain which she uses to share her thoughtful and insightful ideas on how to win at life. Armed with a voice that demands to be heard and habits you will want to follow, Amber writes the road map to living a better life and invites you to come along.

Between retraining the “brain hamsters” that are holding you back and channeling your inner Wabi Sabi to remind YOU how to celebrate your imperfections, Amber offers realistic, easy-to-follow advice that will have you reveling in daily joy and rethinking life’s curve balls as opportunities to grow. Her inspired voice coupled with her wit and endearing charm leave the reader not only wanting more, but wanting Amber to become your best friend and volunteer as your personal Dali Lama.

Perfection isn’t what we think it is.

Perfection is messy and gleeful and has to-do lists that somehow catch fire over the sink. It’s what happens when you’re happy, even for a moment, between all the bills and messes and heartbreaks and chunky flotsam of life.

Are you ready to unhook from that “perfect” box of should and find the dream life that’s been waiting for you all along?

We all have our own stash of love and bright, bold power. You’ve already got it, you just have to dig it out and dust it off. These guides will help you dig & dust. They’ll teach you to focus on what’s inside of you, and your entire life will shift.

Jenna Britton@jennanicole

After reading these essays, you will want Amber to be your best friend. Her writing is witty and sincere, poignant and silly. This is a Master’s Guide in navigating the lows of existence. Life is shitty sometimes – a fact Amber doesn’t ignore – but there are ways to be happy, to be productive; to be a decisive, functioning, contributing member of society, and this essay shows you how.

I sat down to read this essay as I was doubting my own ability, and it was the perfect 10-page reminder that I fucking got this. If you want a gentle reminder that you have it in you to everything that you deep down REALLY want to do – this essay will give you that, while also giving you the actionable steps to help you remember that and remember your worth every damn day of your life.

Also, there are hamsters. Caveman, muzzle-less, perfectionist-loving hamsters who’re working to save you from saber tooth tigers. So, if nothing else, you might want to check that out.

Fact: one of my favourite things about the Internet is Amber’s blog. You know how sometimes you force yourself to wait a little while before eating that delicious chocolate fudge brownie that’s been sitting oh-so-innocently on your kitchen counter, that same brownie you’ve been making eyes at all day? Because you know you’re going to feel a little bit sad once you’ve inhaled that brownie, and then there is NO MORE BROWNIE? I sometimes do that with Amber’s blog posts.

You only think I’m kidding. I AM NOT.

So I obviously freaked out (in a good way!) when Amber started offering essays for sale on her blog. I may or may not have dropped everything in order to read them on my computer when I was supposed to be doing the work that I get paid to do (sorry, bosses!). And then I got to meet Amber while I was visiting LA a little while ago, and I may have nagged her to hurry up with the Recovering Perfectionist essay series, and now the first essay in the series is here (!!!), and DUDE – it was totally worth the wait.

Because this essay is nothing short of brilliant.

I sometimes feel like Amber and I think the exact same thoughts, except she articulates it so much better than I ever could, and bonus: she’s already figured out how to tackle the Brain Hamsters (or Brain Robots, in my case). She’s figured these things out and, because she’s such a generous soul, she wants to help YOU figure it out, and she’ll make you laugh in the process (laughter = good). If you’re struggling with the Brain Hamsters/Robots/Other Types of Furry and/or Metallic Maniacal Creatures, then please, do yourself a favour and read this essay. It will help, I promise. In fact, it will help more than chocolate fudge brownies will (this is a huge call but I’m standing by it).

P.S. You guys are amazing for sending me such nice notes. Every time I get one, I vow to send more thank you letters to people on the internet.

It’s beautifully thought out and honest. I might already be aware of the wisdom of what you’ve written, but it’s easy to forget/ignore, so thanks for writing it all down in one place. – Kavita

I bought your essay this morning and gobbled it right up the first chance I got. Your work is inspiring and funny and touching and brave and honest and sincere and so, so applicable. You made me laugh and tear up. - Garnet

It was lovely and very moving and I’m giving it to my 26 year old daughter this weekend as a Mothers Day present to ME. I’ve shared your writing with her before and it always scares her because you write so many of the things she thinks – but she has always been grateful to read it. – Chris

I really enjoyed your download. It made me want to read more. I like the way you tell stories and the way you open them to have them relate across a broader level is fantastic. MORE MORE MORE! – Marc

I really liked Eyes On Your Own paper. You write about things that matter, you’re honest, and you remind us of things that we know, but don’t know. If you know what I mean. – Marieka

I’ve been eyeing it like a leftover brownie all week. – Jennifer
